Description

URBNSURF, the team that is brought the first proper wave pool to Australia (URBNSURF Melbourne), is hoping to make Sydney their second location. The URBNSURF Sydney wave pool will use Wavegarden Cove technology to produce waves up to 6′ high on the face in a 3.2 hectare facility at Sydney Olympic Park.

Based on what we know about Wavegarden Cove installations (like URBNSURF Melbourne and The Wave Bristol), we’re guessing that URBNSURF Sydney wave pool will have four areas: two Point areas and two Bay areas. It will cater to all different skill levels with advanced and intermediate sessions at the Points and beginner sessions in the Bays.

The advanced waves will offer barrels, turns and air sections. The intermediate waves will provide a nice open face for easier turns and the beginner waves will break like Waikiki. In a one-hour session, 84 surfers will spread out between the four areas. Waves will be produced roughly every 10 seconds. Surfers in the advanced sessions can expect to ride up to 12 waves per hour in the busiest sessions.

The current plan forecasts an opening date in early 2021.

The plans for URBNSURF Sydney will orient the lagoon pier north-south to work best for the prevailing wind conditions. It will offer night surfing sessions thanks to LED lagoon lighting.

The facility will be designed with sustainability in mind, keeping consistent with Sydney Olympic Parks environmentally friendly ethos. For example, the URBNSURF team plans on using renewable energy and water saving systems. The facility will incorporate sustainable building materials, solar panels, on-site rainwater collection and re-use, and a green roof over the main entry plaza.

In addition to surfing, the plan includes a restaurant, surf shop with rentals, surf academy, fitness center, cabanas and a splash pad for kids. They may also offer areas for skateboarding, climbing and event spaces.

The pool will cost $26.5M AUD to build and expects to attract a 350,000 visitors per year.

The local economy will benefit from 45 full time jobs created by URBNSURF Sydney, plus over $250M AUD gross economic contribution to the Sydney region over the life of the project.

History

URBNSURF won the nomination as the preferred developer for the 3.2 hectare site in early 2016.

In September 2016, URBNSURF completed the master plan, design and site feasibility study before signing a lease for the site.

The development application was submitted to the NSW Department of Planning & Environment in June 2017 and approved on December 20, 2017.

Construction is expected to start mid-2020 and URBNSURF Sydney hopes to be open to the public in 2021.
