GroundSwell Charlotte

Savor the Thrill of Walking on Water

Average Reviews

Description

Groundswell, a company bringing wave pools to various parts of America, has plans to build a wave pool in Charlotte, NC. While most information and renderings indicate the use of Wavegarden Cove technology, the Groundswell team has yet to commit to any particular technology.

The pool will cover roughly two acres. When Groundswell Charlotte starts producing waves, surfers of all levels will be presented with waves ranging in shape and size. Surfers can expect to go left and right on everything from 6-foot waves with barrel and air sections to knee-high whitewater rollers.

Groundswell Charlotte will offer lessons, host competitions and group events. They also plan on offering a membership with perks including exclusive surf times, board storage and a private taproom.

If the Groundswell Charlotte team goes with the Wavegarden Cove, expect waves like this.

Groundswell Charlotte will be the center of a multi-use development that will focus on inclusively bringing the community together around surf. Facilities available outside the pool are likely to include a gym, yoga studio, volleyball and a skate park. Their ambitious facility plans also include 134 condos/apartments for sale and rental, restaurants, retail space, live entertainment, co-working and office space.

Michael Schumpert, Director of Groundswell, makes it very clear that Groundswell Charlotte will not be a tourist trap or a country club for surfers. Instead, the facility will be community gathering spot and training center with a focus on health and holistic wellness.

The community focus also means Groundswell Charlotte will be involved in outreach efforts for the greater social and natural good. GroundSwell will host organized events for people with disabilities, special needs, military veterans and underprivileged youth. They also will host local waterway and greenway clean-up efforts. â€‹

The exact location is unknown but based on the Groundswell website, it will be somewhere south of Charlotte, perhaps near Rock Hill, SC.

Groundswell Charlotte is not the same as City Surf Charlotte, which was another wave pool initiative that stalled after failing to raise any money through crowdfunding. Groundswell Charlotte is also different from the Charlotte Wavegarden initiative, which appears to be dead.
