Honokea Surf Village

A KĪPUKA OF EXCELLENCE

Average Reviews

Description

The Honokea Surf Village is a proposed surf park slated for state land on the southwest shore of Oahu near the Kalaeloa Heritage Park.

HK Management, the company behind the surf park, hasn’t identified the wave pool technology they plan on using. However, in their presentation to the Hawaii Community Development Authority, Kelly Slater Wave Co., American Wave Machines and Wavegarden Cove are featured prominently. HK Management has not released specifics about the waves that the 5-acre wave pool will generate, but they have said the surf park will offer waves that appeal to all levels of surfing, including barrels for the more advanced.

Outside of the wave pool, the Honokea Surf Village will include a lazy river, skate park, and other facilities.

HK Management would lease the property from the state, which would generate additional lease revenue that would not otherwise be possible for a remnant of the former Barbers Point Naval Air Station.

HK Management was founded by big-wave surfer and ocean safety expert Brian Keaulana and co-founder Kenan Knieriem Jr.

The project is expected to cost $72 million dollars.

In January 2020, the development authority voted 7-1 to give Honokea permission to explore the feasibility of constructing the “surf village”. Honokea now has 18 months to evaluate the site, assess the underground water supply, and negotiate terms for a long-term lease. HK Management declined to set a development timetable because the project still requires the feasibility study, environmental study, design work and financing if the site proves feasible.
