The Lagoon will be a large waterpark centered around wave pool that uses Surf Lakes 5 Wave technology to produce a variety of waves suitable for beginner, intermediate and advanced surfers.
Assuming the wave pool at The Lagoon is similar to the Surf Lakes 5 Waves prototype in Yeppoon, intermediate and advanced surfer will get to choose from four distinct A-frame peaks ranging from 4-8 feet (1-2.4m) high on the face of the wave. Each peak will provide a left and right hand wave that offer barrels and ripable faces. The pool will also offer smaller whitewater rollers.
Using a plunger-type mechanism in the center of a lake, the Surf Lakes 5 Waves technology can produce 2400 rides per hour total (across all the breaks in the pool). That means intermediate and advanced surfers will be able ride at least 10 waves in a 1-hour session even when they pool is packed with 200 people.
The wave pool will be the centerpiece of a 15-acre park in Bournemouth, UK, that includes a variety of accommodations, indoor and outdoor activities. Accomodations will range from a 150-room hotel to “hobbit huts”. Activities outside the water will include indoor skydiving, climbing, and more. The Lagoon will be open all year, and the team hopes to attract 500,000 people to their resort each year.
As a “climate conscious” company, The Lagoon has also pledged to plant one tree for every surf session they sell.
The Lagoon team, lead by founder and director Matthew Radford, hosted a private investor meeting in May 2019 and they are continuing to seek additional investment. In October, Matthew announced that the team secured a site and has an advisory board in place along with some funds for planning. They hope to be open to the public sometime in late 2022.
According to Wavelengthmag.com, the entire facility will cost roughly £35m ($44m USD) to complete. According to the team, The Lagoon could create a many as 100 jobs.
