Wavegarden is planning a Cove installation in Costa Del Sol in Southern Spain.
The full-size, 2.2 hectare (5.4 acre) Wavegarden Cove facility would host up to 90 surfers in each 1-hour session. According to Sur In English, the wave height would measure between 1m (3 feet) and 2.4m (7.8 feet) on the face of the wave.
Assuming the Costa Del Sol installation is similar to other Cove facilities like The Wave in Bristol, we expect the wave pool to be organized into areas that correspond to surfers’ skill level. The advanced area will offer left and right-hand waves with barrel, air and high-performance turning sections. The intermediate area will offer fun, but more forgiving 3-4 foot (1m) faces that help surfers learn to turn, and the beginner area will offer knee-high whitewater rollers. Lessons will also be available. The length of ride in each area will probably run 12-15 seconds.
The waves will be similar to, but longer than, the waves at the Wavegarden R&D Center pictured below.
Standard Wavegarden Cove installations can generate between 900 and 1000 waves per hour. Its not clear how many surfers will be in each session at Costa Del Sol, but its likely that each surfer will ride around 15 waves in a 1-hour session.
In addition to the wave pool, the facility will include a skateboard park, restaurants, bars and a surf shop.
The facility is designed to maximize energy efficiency and minimize environmental impact. The wave pool will use high-efficiency electric motors that transform reuse part of the energy from the wave motion to filter the water.
An architecture firm named “Estudio Segui” produced some renderings (below) of the project that include 460 homes and hotel accommodation. Its not clear if this is part of the proposal or just speculation. Stay tuned as we learn more.
