Palms Springs Surf Club Pumps its First Barrels

The Palm Springs Surf Club became the first of four wave pools in Palm Springs area to produce surf this week when it pumped out some impressive waves for founders Cheyne Magnusson, Kalani Robb, and World Champ Italo Ferreira.

The wave pool, which uses Surf Loch technology, has only been turned up to 50% of its possible power but its already produced some heavy barrels. Surf Loch uses air pressure to pump water in and out of a series of chambers. Variations in the timing, speed and volume of the water displaced as the chambers “fire” provide the flexibility Cheyne and co. need to experiment with wave shapes and sizes.

All mobile phones and cameras are confiscated at the door of the Palm Springs Surf Club, but the Inertia managed to break the story and find a leaked photo of Italo in a square barrel (above). That particular wave required a very difficult take off one a wedge that bounces of the wall. According to reports, the session also included some serious ripping and impressive airs. The flexibility of the modular Surf Loch technology appears to be effective.

The PSSC crew will release official footage soon. They are working on more funding to double the size of the wave pool before they open to the public. Subscribe to the newsletter or follow us on social media and we’ll keep you posted as this story develops.
