The city of Krefeld and German developers Elakari signed a letter of intent focused on the creation of a wave pool and nature park. The nature and surf park will occupy 9 hecatres of land adjacent to Elfrather lake. The park will host a 2-hectare Wavegarden Cove wave pool that produces surfing waves that appeal to beginner, intermediate and advanced surfers. If everything goes according to plan, Elakari expects to open the park to the public in 2023.
The wave pool will be divide into four areas: Two “Points” that provide waves for advanced and intermediate surfers, and two “Bays” that provide beginner waves.
The more advanced waves will measure up to 1.95m (7 feet) on the face of the wave. Thanks to the flexibility of Wavegarden Cove technology, the waves will vary in size and shape, offering barrel, turn and air sections. The length of ride will vary between 10 an 15 seconds.
The beginner waves in the Bays will be perfect for learning to surf. They will range in size from .5-1m. They will be gentle, whitewater rollers that great for learning to surf.
One-hour sessions at the pool are expected to cost around €45 ($50 USD) per person. If the Kerfeld wave pool is anything like other Wavegarden Cove installations, surfers will have a chance to catch at least 10 waves per session.

Elakari EVP Andreas Niedergesäss said “The surf and nature park in Krefeld should be the next wave that can be reached by surfers in northwestern continental Europe. In addition to the surf park, we offer offers for wellness, local recreation, Sports, events and gastronomy. Overall, we expect around 200,000 visitors a year. “
The next step is a vote on January 30th. Politicians will decide whether to proceed with a development plan. If they decide to proceed, in the coming year the city will work together with local citizens and businesses to asses impact and confirm community support.
