Construction is well underway for the artificial Southern Ocean Surf Reef at Middleton Beach in Albany, Western Australia. Construction is expected to be complete sometime in May or June of 2025.
Construction started mid-March shortly after Heron Construction’s Machiavelli backhoe dredge arrived on site t0 help unload and position the granite boulders brought on from the P.T. Monto. The Monto carried the boulders from the Port Albany area.
The construction efforts are being led by Heron Construction.
The total cost of the Southern Ocean Surf Reef will be close to $13 million AUD. Its been about two decades since the people of Albany, and long-time advocate Peter Bolt, planted the seeds that are about to bear fruit. The community, and this author, looks forward to seeing what the SOSR can produce.
Other reefs may follow as well. “There’s been a lot of interest from Bunbury and Geraldton who are looking over to see how this goes and keep up with it, so in the anticipation that its successful, they can build on their own,” said Mr. Bolt to the Albany Advertiser.
