New Surf Park Project Announced in Hawaii
A new wave pool project in Oahu took its first step forward on Wednesday when the Hawaii Community Development Authority voted 7-1 in favor of a feasibility study for Honokea Surf Village.
The proposed site for the project is in Kalaealoa, 23 miles west of Honolulu. The centerpiece of the 19-acre facility, a 5-acre wave pool, would offer waves suitable to all levels of surfing, including barrels for advanced surfers.
In addition to the wave pool, Honokea Surf Village plans to host a skate park, lazy river and other facilities.
HK Management, the company behind the project, has not specified which wave pool technology they will use, but in their presentation to the Development Authority, Kelly Slater Wave Co., American Wave Machines and Wavegarden Cove are featured prominently.
HK Management was founded by big-wave surfer and ocean safety expert Brian Keaulana and co-founder Kenan Knieriem Jr.
They declined to set a development schedule because the project still has to go through feasibility studies, environmental impact analysis, design work and financing.
