Construction Begins on Surf Stadium Japan, Opening June 2020

Construction started on a PerfectSwell wave pool in Shizunami, Japan. If the project proceeds as planned, the wave pool could be open as early as June 2020.

While little is known about the shape and size of the waves that Surf Stadium Japan (SSJ) will produce, it’s clear that the flexibility PerfectSwell technology can offer barrel, turn and air sections. Similar installations, like the BSR wave pool in Waco, offer a variety of wave that can measure up to 6 feet on the face of the wave. Toshihiko Adachi, CEO of SSJ, wants the stadium to facilitate competitive training and a rapidly expanding and enthusiastic surf community.

According to SurferToday.com, the wave pool will produce six large waves per second – ten per minute.

The project location, which is not far from Makinohara in Shizuoka Prefecture, was chosen to host training facilities for the U.S. and other surfing teams.
