Description

Emerge Surf is planning to build a wave pool in the Birmingham, UK area.

In August 2019, Emerge Surf submitted a planning application to the North Warwickshire Borough Council for a £25 million ($30 million USD) facility focused around a wave pool at Coleshill. The site is 15 acres, and the plans include a 5.4 acre Wavegarden Cove which is roughly the same size as URBNSURF Melbourne. A variety of waves will be produced offering surfing for professionals, beginners and everyone in between.

Assuming the Emerge Surf wave pool is similar to other Wavegarden Cove installations, it will be organized into 3 areas corresponding to skill level.

In the advanced area of the pool, the waves will measure up to 2m (6.5 feet) on the face of the wave. Lefts and rights will provide barrel, air and high-performance turn opportunities. The 1m (3-4 foot) intermediate waves will give surfers lefts and rights with an open face that is ideal for practicing turns. Beginners will ride knee-high whitewater rollers.

Emerge Surf will produce waves that are similar in shape to the waves at the Wavegarden R&D facility, seen below.

Emerge Surf Birgminham will also provide lessons, a surf shop, restaurant, fitness studio, physio and massage room and children’s play area.

Additional amenities in the plan include an outdoor heated swimming pool, a perimeter track for electric skateboards and a 17,000 square foot building.

The site design submitted in the application was done by A+DP, but a construction team has yet to be appointed.

The Emerge Surf team hopes to start construction by the end of 2019 and open to the public by the spring of 2021. They also plan on using renewable energy and low-carbon technology to minimize environmental impact. The current price tag for the development of Emerge Surf Birmingham is £25 million ($30M USD).

Upon completion, Emerge Surf anticipates creating the equivalent of 100 full time jobs. They hope to attract up to 250,000 visitor a year and produce an annual economic contribution of £18-20M ($21-25M USD) for the region.
