A Murphy's Wave Pool in a South African Waterpark

Average Reviews

Description

Roaring Lagoon is a wave pool in the Valley of Waves water park in Sun City, South Africa. The wave pool, powered by Murphy’s Waves technology, is typically used by visitors for splashing and swimming, but it can be rented out on an hourly basis for surfing.

Wave Shape and Size

The Roaring Lagoon wave pool generates left and right-hand waves that measure around 4 feet high on the face of the wave. They can be ridden for up to 8 seconds, but they tend to close out pretty quickly, providing time for one turn and a close-out maneuver.

Productivity and Capacity

The Roaring Lagoon wave pool generates a wave every 90 seconds when it’s being used for surfing. That equates to 40 waves per hour.

Nuts and Bolts

Roaring Lagoon wave pool uses Murphy’s Waves technology to generate waves. The process starts by filling large chambers sitting behind the back wall of the pool with roughly 500,000 liters of water. After the chambers are filled, a vent at the bottom of each chamber opens to allow the water in the chamber to flush suddenly into the deep end of the pool. This creates a wave that travels toward the shallow end of the pool and breaks. Pumping more water into the chambers creates larger waves. The timing and sequence of each vent opening can be controlled by the operator to create variations in wave shape.

The pool contains approximately 8,000,000 liters of water.
